Third place for Shaun today around the hard-pack of Leon and a winding course that has survived heavy amounts of rainfall for the past three days. ‘24’ fluffed his gatedrop for the twenty minute and two lap qualification heat but used the power of his works 450SX-F to slot into fourth place.

Shaun then hounded Evgeny Bobryshev, passed the Russian and was on the rear wheel of Gautier Paulin right up until the flag. Conditions were tough with the 1800m altitude – affecting the speed and performance of the factory bikes – and the track decidedly one-line but the British Champion still had a decent feeling.

“I felt so good out there today,” he said. “The bike had less power but it is something that everybody is having to deal with. Towards the end of the moto it was a bit heavier to breathe but I was getting faster and set my best lap on the last one. Earlier on I saw Bobryshev was closing the gas slower than me in most corners and I could not believe how easy it was to stay with him. I saw Paulin getting away so I knew I had to pass and move. Overall a decent day and we’re hopeful for tomorrow.”
