This weekend’s Hawkstone Park International meeting – one of the premier MXGP pre-season fixtures for Grand Prix riders – will be the first official race for the new SS24 KTM MXGP team.
Shaun will open a busy calendar of international and domestic commitments in Shropshire and around the popular sandy venue north of Shrewsbury.
Simpson, who recently completed the first photoshoot for his KTM-backed GP set-up in a training and testing sojourn to Spain, will commence his fifteenth year at the highest level of the sport. The 31 year old Scot has returned to a familiar ‘formula’ for 2020 in an attempt to capture top results in the fiercely competitive MXGP division, and the outing on the KTM 450 SX-F at Hawkstone Park begins a crucial period of weeks that leads up to the initial Grand Prix of twenty with the British round at Matterley Basin on March 1st.
“It’s cool to finally get going after what has been one of the busiest and most challenging winters of my career…but also one of the most exciting,” Simpson said. “We’ve managed to develop the KTM to my taste and I cannot wait to start racing the bike to gauge where we are. With the hard work from people like my Dad [Willie Simpson] and John Volleberg and returning to train with Kevin McGuire we are making something new but also what has worked well for us in the past. The team has been created with the support from all the partners and sponsors that I really wanted to have on my side and that means heading out onto the track on Sunday will feel even more rewarding. Bring it on.”
Hawkstone Park will feature a host of Simpson’s MXGP rivals all making their maiden 2020 laps in anger. The UK’s sole winner of a premier class world championship round since 2007 (four victories in 2013, 2015 and 2017) will then attempt the LaCapelle Marival International in France before aligning his sights on Matterley Basin in Winchester for his home Grand Prix.
